Day 1
Explore Tambo’s Wilderness
Spend the day looping out east from Tambo, take a self-drive tour through an area of rugged beauty, traversing a landscape of deep gorges and vast cliff lines. The Wilderness Way tourist drive traverses through the western edge of the Sandstone Belt and provides access to the Salvatore Rosa National Park where crystal clear water of Mitchell Springs form a permanent wetland area. Pack a picnic and stop along the way to discover the historical sites and take in the natural rock formations including the Sentinel and Spyglass Peaks.
Day 2
Meet the Locals
Take a stroll around one of the friendliest towns in the Outback. Call into the heritage precinct, where local volunteers can fill you in on the area’s sheep and wool industry, racing heritage and our early communications. While there, try your hand at Morse Code messaging. Further along the street you can spend a relaxing afternoon in the Tambo Dam Park, enjoy the view, watch the bird life, and fire up the BBQ or if you are still feeling energetic there is an outdoor gymnasium to use. From the dam you can link into the Coolibah a 3km trek along the banks of the mighty Barcoo. Learn about the local flora and take a side-track to the Qantas crash site. Head into the Royal Carrangarra Hotel at 5pm to place your bet on your favourite chick at Ben’s Chicken Races.
Day 3
Discover your creativity
Tambo is an incredibly creative community! Pop into the Grassland Art Gallery and discover local art works and handcrafted giftware. If you are there on the right day, you might even be able to join in an arts workshop and learn a new skill. Just the place to find that one-off present for the hard-to-buy-for. A visit to Tambo is not complete without a visit to Tambo Teddies where the town’s world-famous sheepskin teddy bears are created on site. Pop into the workshop and watch the bears come to life. You might just find one that has to come home with you.
