Day 1
Take a step back in time in Blackall’s history
Call into Blackall’s Ram Park to wander around the grounds filled with ancient machinery and relocated buildings. Discovering the pioneering history of both the Blackall and Yalleroi communities. Learn about schooling in the outback, the grazing lifestyle and Queensland’s rail ambulance. Be there at 10.00am to join Stewie, a former stockman for a tour and demonstration of bush craft and bushman’s skills. After lunch (best at one of our local cafes) continue uncovering the past with a trip out to the Historic Blackall Woolscour, the only fully intact steam-powered wool washing plant left in Australia. Enjoy a fully guided hour and a half long tour through this living museum that provides a direct link to Australia’s past.
Day 2
Time to get Arty
Blackall-Tambo is the hub of the arts in the Outback. Head downtown to visit the Bushman’s gallery, enjoy the local artworks and artisan products while chatting to a local artist. Further along the street call into the Red Ridge to discover indigenous art works and the new Red Ridge fashion clothing label using authentic designs inspired by the simplistic yet enriching canvas of the Outback. Revel in more art along with antiques, fashion, quirky artefacts over a glorious lunch at The Lodge on Hawthorn before you head around Blackall’s public art trail in the afternoon. Walk, ride a bike or drive around this outdoor sculpture gallery, each piece bears some significance to the town’s cultural or natural history. End your day at the Roly Poly, the perfect place for drinks, sunsets, and photographs.
Day 3
Thursday is all action
Head out to the Blackall Saleyards to experience a rural country cattle sale. Get a bird’s eye view of all the action from the viewing deck nestled amongst the magnificently shady fig trees. Enjoy a Barcoo beef banger with locally made sauces and condiments at the Saleyards canteen for lunch. Soak off the dust and the rich, earthy scents of the yards with a visit to the Blackall Aquatic Centre and spa. Rest, relax and revive in the warm bubbling, therapeutic artesian waters fed by 58 degree bore water.
